Title: Sirius dying...?

Paige Robohn - May 4, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
Umm, I know this is a while ago, but how did sirius die? I mean I know some spell hit him and he fell behind the thingy. but it couldn't have been avada kedavra because that has a green jet of light and this had a red jet of light. does anyone know, or have guesses....?

Cecil Cloud - May 4, 2006 07:55 PM (GMT)
My guess is when he fell, he landed on sharp rocks and died Mortal Kombat style.

Squall Leonheart - May 4, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
nice Cecil

right, basically, that viel i believe is the place people go when they die. Nick said that he didnt want to go, so he remained. im guessing that the place that the veil took him was "the place of the dead" kind of like heaven. its an ingenius creation if im right.

Melanie Hunter - May 4, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
It definatley wasn't the spell. I think he died behind the veil sometime after that. I mean...I doubt there's food and water back there.

i dont think its the food and water, i think that the veil is "a death chamber" remember, they heard voices, but only Luna and Harry could. who could they hear? i believe, whoever they have known die.

Paige Robohn - May 5, 2006 06:41 PM (GMT)
Yea, but what was the spell?

Squall Leonheart - May 5, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
the spell was stupefy, it didnt kill him, the veil did

Melanie Hunter - May 5, 2006 07:33 PM (GMT)
Yeah. It only says it was a red jet of light, but I know that red= stupefy so..yeah. What Tim said.

~Mel

Squall Leonheart - May 5, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
red= stupefy or expelliarmus, but again, neither can kill

Kiley Stewert - May 5, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
but harry could hear the voices when he went into the chamber origionally, before Sirius died.

Simner Farden - May 5, 2006 10:07 PM (GMT)
Tim....Red is Stupify and expleiarmus is silver..or it is in the books

and I think Tim has the right idea. I think that the vail...well didn't kill him...but 'took' him...but he didn't die...just went to where dead people go...if that makes senice...but yes...like Harry and Luna could both see thestrals so yeah...maybe its the same...like Harry saw Cedric die, Luna saw her mom....and did they mention Nevile hearing them?

Melanie Hunter - May 6, 2006 01:20 AM (GMT)
No, but they never really mention Neville that much at all. I dunno, I'll reread the DoM scenes and tell you what I think. OOH WAIT! ANALYSIS ESSAY.

Urgh, Lit. class is getting to my head.

expelliarmus is red Simner, check GOF again.

QUOTE
Voldemort was ready. As Harry shouted 'Expelliarmus', Voldemort cried 'Avada Kedavra!'

A jet of green light issued from Voldemort's wand just as a jet of red light blasted from Harry's

right, thats a direct quote from GOF.

now, as for OOTP

QUOTE
On the other side, Ginny and Neville were staring, apparently entranced, at the veil too

direct from OOTP

right, now, lets analyse. we know that Hary couldnt take his eyes from the veil, because he has known death. (his parents, and Cedric) Luna could hear voices, although we don't know if she was as entranced as the others. she's seen her mother die. Neville's grandfather died, i believe, and he was transfixed. Ginny was the only one who was transfixed who hadn't seen death (she could not see thestrals) however, i think that she understands death, and that is why she was transfixed. she was so close to death in COS that shes bound to be transfixed.

finally, id like to point something out.

'you will find several escaped death eaters contained in the death chamber, bound by an anti-dissapperation jinx.'

thats Dumbledore talking to Fudge. we know the name of the room is the death chamber, so i can say that i think we're pretty much spot on with what i said earlier

Simner Farden - May 6, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
Hmm...this is weird..I just read the book agein and noticed that part and was gonna post it...then I saw that you just posted it..so yeah...

Paige Robohn - May 7, 2006 11:12 PM (GMT)
lol I lost my OOTP copy. but yeah, expelliarumus is red. But why did he like, die that way? I don't think it makes sense....

Hermione Granger - May 7, 2006 11:27 PM (GMT)
I didnt really pay attention to how he died, i just remember that i figued it out when Lupin told him...and then i got really mad and threw my book. i love sirius. he didnt need to die. *sniffle*

Squall Leonheart - May 8, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
right, im gonna be using a few quotes again.

ok, effects of expelliarmus spell:

QUOTE
Both of them swung their wands above their heads and pointed them at their opponent; Snape cried: "Expelliarmus!" There was a dazzling flash of scarlet light and Lockhart was blasted off his feet: He flew backward off the stage, smashed into the wall, and slid down it to sprawl on the floor. (CoS pg 190/142)

QUOTE
Harry made up his mind in a split second. Before Snape could take even one step toward him, he had raised his wand. "Expelliarmus!" he yelled -- except that his wasn't the only voice that shouted. There was a blast that made the door rattle on its hinges; Snape was lifted off his feet and slammed into the wall, then slid down it to the floor, a trickle of blood oozing from under his hair. He had been knocked out. Harry looked around. Both Ron and Hermione had tried to disarm Snape at exactly the same moment. (PoA pg 361/265)

ok, two references to expelliarmus being used. as you can see, there are similar effects.

first, COS confirms that Expelliarmus is red, or scarlet as the description goes. this means that it is in the running for being the curse used.

the second thing is that it blasts the person off their feet. Snape and Lockheart go flying when the curse hits them.

so, when Sirius dies: (note, this is a little choppy, the description of his death takes a while to get through)

QUOTE
Only one pair was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light; he was laughing at her.
'Come on, you can do better than that!' he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room.
The second jet of light hit him squarely in the chest.
The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened with shock.

skip a paragraph:

QUOTE
It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch.
Harry saw the look of migled fear and surprise on his god-father's wasted, once handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place

ok, thats enough.

right, so now we know exactly how Sirius died, but teh decriptions of his fall doesnt match the description of Lockheart or Snape falling, so that suggests that it was Stupefy.

Stupefy can't kill. even the most powerful wizard couldn't kill with Stupefy. it stuns, thats it. so the explanation has to lie with the veil.

as i have stated, i believe that the veil covers the place that wizards go when they die. Lupin stops Harry from touching the curtains, as does Hermione earlier, so that means it could be anything behind there. we have never had a description and i believe we never will. but the voices which only Harry, Neville, Luna and Ginny could hear (3 who have realised about death, one who came close enough to understand) and the fact that Sirius disappeared forever means that that veil has to be hiding something to do with death, and possibly a form of 'underworld'

Adam Smithola - September 3, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
I know it was posted FOREVER ago and it is the 2nd post in here, but I thought Nick said that becoming a ghost is a thing that is decided either before or at birth and not when you die. He also said that not many people choose that path and that Sirius wouldn't be come a ghost, but if it WAS a thing decided after death, then don't you think he would have chosen to become a ghost for Harry? I would have thought so at least because Sirius cared about Harry SO much.
