John Keyes was alone in the Owlery with his eastern screech owl Velox. Velox was a small owl, about the size of a small football. He had stripes of black, brown and white. He was smaller than most of the other owls in the owlery. John put his hand out and Velox hopped form his perch onto Johns hand. John then inspected Velox to make sure he wasnt hurt from his last flight. John found nothing wrong with him so he let him fly back to his perch. John found a place to sit that wasnt under any perches and pulled out his Defense Against The Dark Arts book. As he began to read Velox flew back down and landed on his shoulder. John didnt mind and continued to read.

Kate walked into the owlry ajusting her glasses. She looked around and spotted a boy sitting. she took off her reading glasses, the old Kate would ignore the boy and send her letter but the new Kate wanted to talk to him. She smiled and walked over to him finding a place to sit infront of him. He was reading so she just sat listening waiting till he was done to speak to him.

John finished his page and looked up "Hello" he said. "My names John" he continued.

Kate smiled. " Sorry didnt mean to disturb you..I'm Kate..Nice meeting you."

"Dont worry, you didnt disturb me" John said smiling back. "I usually come here to spend some time with Velox here" he said pointing to the now sleeping owl on his shoulder. "It keeps him happy"

Kate broke her gaze from him and looked at the cute little owl. " He's so cute!" she said smiling.

Velox wakes up and looks at Kate. "I guess he is" John said with a smile. "Is your owl here or delivering a letter?" he asked.

" Oh well both..." she said looking around for snoflake. " she must've gone to find me.." she shrugged.

"Thats pretty cool how your owl looks for you to give you letters" he said. "Velox just waits here for me to come" John said scratching the back of velox's head.

She smiled and looked at Volex. " yeah I guess..."

"With the name snoflake, im guessing that shes a snowy owl?" John asked.

" Yeah she is...and here she comes!" she said smiling and holding her arm out. Snowflake landed softly on her forearm and hooted softly carrying a message on her lag. " thanks sweety..." she took the letter and gave snowflake a treat, snowflake hopped onto a nearb perch and burried her head under her wing.

"Snowy owls are magnificent birds" John said looking at snoflake.

Kate nodded " yeah they are...but she does have a temper on her..." she said looking at the scars on her fingers from snowflake then laughed slightly.

"Ouch" John said looking at the scars.

" Eh I dunno if she knows that she is hurting me..." she let out a small laugh but caught herself she thought her laugh was horrid and stupid, se looked down at the ground.

John looked at her "Im sure if she knew she was hurting you, she would stop" He explained.

" I dunno about that.." she said another laugh escaping her lips. " but I know what makes her mad...so I usually don't do those things..."

John looked at Velox "I know he hates when i do this". John pulled out a quill pen and put in front of Velox's face. Velox stared at it for a second, then snatched it in his beak and flew out the window.

Kate smiled at him then cleared out a space to sit next to john since her legs were kinda tired from squatting. She opened the letter sighed before even reading it and crumpled it up setting it on the ground beside her.

"bad news?" John asked. Velox flew back in (without the quill) and landed on John's shoulder.

" No...it's from my father..." she said simply before adding. " he doesn't like the new me so he sends me all these letters until I write back..I should send him a howler..." she sighed.

John was confused "The new you?, what was the old you like?" He asked.

" Boring, nerdy, ugly, annoying, work obsessed, the old me was always the same my hair was always in a braid, I'd never wear anything but my uniform...hated to have anything to do with boys...or anyone else for that matter...My sister hated the old me...so I changed for all of them and that still isn't enough.." she said looking over at him.

"I see...." John said "Parents can be that way sometimes". He looked at Kate "You should send them that howler" He said with a smile.

She smiled a little. " they'd just send me one back..." she laughed a little then looked at Velox.

"There goes that idea" He replied. Velox stared at Kate.

" he's really cute ya know..." she smiled slightly then looke john in the eyes.

"I do, and i think he does too" John said nodding at Velox. John looked Kate in the eyes "So... whats your favorite class?" He asked.

" Charms..." she said not breaking the gaze. " Yours?"

"Probably defense against the dark arts" John said. "Whats your favorite spell?" He asked.
