Melanie Hunter - June 29, 2007 05:10 PM (GMT)
Haha, yeah, Bethany and I went to the myspace black curtain screening of it last night! It was amazing. If any of you want me to tell you more about what it was like or answer your questions I will. :)

Spoiler warning
Did they put Kretcher back into the movie? Acording to JKR, He plays a big role in the final book.
Melanie Hunter - June 29, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
SPOILER FOR MOVIE_____________________________
Yes, they did. He had a very small role, but he was there. He was never really introduced or anything. They just showed him mumbling about the filth in the house twice: once in the beginning and once at christmas.

WOOOT I'm going at midnight tonight! I've gone to every potter movie at midnight...
Tyrin Yates - July 10, 2007 05:57 PM (GMT)
Due to the disgusting actions of Warner Brothers the US get the BRITISH film a day earlier than the British themselves. I shall be seeing it in the day on Thursday 12th
Finnigan Tatupu - July 10, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
Hasn't the UK gotten the other movies before anyone else?
Tyrin Yates - July 10, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)
Im not sure but I think we deserve every movie before everyone else. To be honest, releasing it everywhere on the same day would have been a better idea.
Finnigan Tatupu - July 11, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
I'm super p*ssed... I got my ticket for the movie for me and my friends, and we went to our neighborhood theater... When we got there, the beginning was great, but about 10-15 minutes in to it, their projector caught on fire or something... I didn't get to see any of it... I'm going to try to go to a different theater today, but I doubt I can get tickets.
Tyrin Yates - July 11, 2007 04:50 PM (GMT)
God that is awful news. DId you get any sort of refund?
Chelsea Cordelia - July 11, 2007 05:13 PM (GMT)
Awww dng Im p****d..Ive seen every movie opening night except this one..Im flippen grounded grrrrrrrrrrrr
Sydney Cox - July 13, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
oh why is this happenning to every one? lol even i missed my first show...same...ive been watching the first show, with the same 4 people since the 1st movie...but i had to go to some stupid family thing this time, and i had to give up the harry potter first show!
but i've seen it now, n im really p****d at the director.
The first two movies were SO good! chris columbus was really awesome! the fourth was nice, the 3rd and this one were really getting on my nerves!
Finnigan Tatupu - July 13, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
Chris Columbus couldn't handle a camera. His shots were bleak... They were all the same... Yates at least has variety in his shots. This was the hardest movie to make as it is the longest book. The first one was bad, and the second one was about the same. The third one was much better, then the fourth one fell off. The fifth one was the best.
Sydney Cox - July 14, 2007 06:48 AM (GMT)
lol we have the complete opposite prefernces in movies...i hated the third movie, it was well made...i agree david yates 'makes' the movies better, but columbus did better justice to the books...
yeah and i know this was the hardest to make, i am NOT complaining about scenes being cut, that was necessary...but some scenes were changed when there was no need to do so...in the beginning, its supposed to be night, as in dark, and the dementers attack on the magnolia crescent not a weird passage, i see no reason for this change. Sirius' house pops up between two houses in a very awkward way, this(in the movie) was very mechanincal. once they reached hogwarts it was quite good.
then again in the end the way sirius died was SO abrupt it was avada kedavra-boom and vanish....hello? it wouldn't have harmed to show that scene a bit longer...how much? 3 more minutes?...why not? it is an important scene, Sirius Black died goddamnit. it was put up in a very not emotional way...
i liked the dumbledore n voldy fight though...
i would not like to see more special effects at the cost of changes made in the story line, its my opinion.
but may be because, for me, the begginning and end of the movie were not appealing, i really was dissappointed.
Tyrin Yates - July 14, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
Im with Finn 100% on this
Order
Prisoner
Goblet
Chamber/Philosopher
Sydney - The director made an artistic decision to have it as day time. This dramatises the convergence of Dementors - they bring a bad weather/omen with them. Having it in an underpass was also well done, it creates an eerie atmosphere and is much more cinematic than having it on a simple road.
Admittedly the appearance of GP could have appeared more magically.
Finnigan Tatupu - July 14, 2007 03:46 PM (GMT)
The symbolism of having the warm summer day, then when the dementors came, having an icy rainy day... It shows how even though things are happy, how quickly things can turn when the dementors are around. The purpose of the pace of the fight was to make it seem confusing. Quick spells, with rocks flying everywhere gave the scene a confused look.
I also like the scenes of the past memories for Harry and Snape...
Sydney Cox - July 14, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
Like i said earlier, i would not like to see more special effects at the cost of changes made in the story line.
Yes, it was creative of Yates to change the dementor scene, but when i see a movie adapted from a book, i already know what the next scene is, and if i don't get that, i obviously am dissappointed.
But yes, warner bros wouldn't care if i don't like it, lol! because all the kids in the cinema were gushing about the 'special effects' and such.
i am still not convinced on the sirius part though. same reason as above.
and i have removed 'sucks' from the post above lol! i just realised the director isn't bad at his job...
Tyrin Yates - July 14, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
The way I see it the book and the film are two separate entities. The film cannot be loyal to the book at all because of the vast size and complexity of the world Rowling created. I judge them apart. Lord of the Rings was nothing like the books, the films were brilliant, the books were crap really (this is a different debate). The reason potter gets criticism is because the films are on par with, or slightly under, the books and therefore fans compare the two.
Sydney Cox - July 14, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
yeah i agree, with the lord of the rings thing too.
i try to see it differently. like i was really loathing the movie the first night. then i tried to see the shortcomings in making a movie out of a book, so my hatred for OotP decreased. but even then i just end up comparing the two, i go with this thing set in my mind so, i cannot appreciate movies made from books.
but then again, not complicated books make good movies (eg. da vinci code, gone with the wind , most comics blah blah.) unfortunately HP is more complicated than these...
Tyrin Yates - July 14, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
Again I find myself disagreeing. the Da Vinci Code was terrible really, the book was much more entertaining. Lord of the Rings was complex yet the films are deemed good.
I think part of the problem, if there had to be one, is the films were not filmed by a single director back to back like LOTR. Therefore the series of films are rather choppy. They dont grow or blossom (unless, there is a director that does more than one film such as Yates or Columbus) - and Directors like Mike Newell ignore all the filming and music before hand and start again which was an awful thing to do.
The reason Order of the Phoenix is my favourite film was because there wasn't moments in it where I was thinking "Im bored" - it was so very fast paced for a film with little action involved. I felt the plot moved quickly which was excellent for me.
The acting also stepped up a bar.
Melanie Hunter - July 14, 2007 06:38 PM (GMT)
I love Chris Columbus. I don't care if he didn't have snappy camera work, I love his movies, and not only the Harry Potter ones. And not just Harry Potter and RENT. Every movie that he's been a part of, I've enjoyed.
My favorite movies in order?

As for OotP, I really did love how it was filmed, especially the scene with Harry and Dudley running away from the park. That was pretty much awesome. lol. Of course, it was very much like every horror movie ever written but it was still awesome. lol.

Tyrin Yates - July 14, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
Apart from Potter and Rent his movie portfolio is pretty poor. The first two films lacked any sort of depth for me, there was just nothing there. They actually bore me and its probably CC's fault. For me Cuaron ties with Yates as the best director thus far. I watched Azkaban last night and some of the scenes in the film are just wonderful (the swing on Privet Drive). However after the time turner the movie fell apart for me.
The climax was the only decent part about 'Secrets.
Melanie Hunter - July 14, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
Oh I do love the Knight Bus stuff, don't get me wrong. There are some things that just can't be denied are pretty awesome.
And Adventures in Babysitting is a bugging awesome movie. So are Goonies, Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Fantastic Four, and Night at the Museum had retarded moments but that was the writer's fault, not his. lol.
Anywho, I dunno. The first movie just gives me headaches anymore, it really does. It's so just...gah. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it. *shakes head*

Sydney Cox - July 15, 2007 04:48 AM (GMT)
Exactly! i am sorry, but for me, the movie was too fast paced.
And yes, every movie had some scenes messed up, but quite a few scenes done perfectly.
and about the continuity thing, i think if Yates will make the 7th movie too, then the 5th,6th,7th will look the best of the series. Becuase of that same continuity.
but one thing i found missing was dumbledore's signature half moon spectacles! it was like harry without a scar!
and one thing i really liked about this movie was the casting, all the new characters perfectly moulded into the characters. esp. umbridge and bellatrix.
Finnigan Tatupu - July 15, 2007 05:50 AM (GMT)
The movie couldn't be slow paced. Each page of a screenplay translates to about one minute. The book is over 1000 pages. Including everything at the speed it happened in the book would make a movie that would be unbearably long. The fast pace of the movie was meant to get your adrenaline pumping, and to make the scary moments in the movie that much more frightening.
Cecelia Ferrari - July 16, 2007 12:39 AM (GMT)
I just saw OOTP last night with my sister...I liked it a lot but I heard like 8 little kids cry hysterically when they killed Sirius and a few more shout "AVADA KADEVRA!" like they were going to help lol.

SPOILER WARNING!
OotP was awful, just awful. I was very upset. First of all, Harry Potter, in a lot of the other books and movies, is definitely Gary Stu. He has very little depth. In the fifth book, Ron joining the quidditch team and becoming prefect is very important, because it reveals how jealous Harry is. This gives him a depth and human quality Rowling has before failed to deliver. In the movie, all growth and depth is stricken, and Harry remains perfect. Even the "darkness" the movie showed could not be chalked up to any real humanity, but to Voldemort. Also, Luna was sorely absent. Her few scenes did not contain the crucial parts she played in the book. Harry's interview with the quibbler was missing. Also, Sirius' death was done wrong, and crushed the hopes of many 'he's still alive' theorists.
END SPOILER!
Finnigan Tatupu - July 20, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
Like I said earlier, the book is 1100 pages long. When a screenplay is written, each page is one minute of the movie. Even if you figure two pages of the book for every screenplay page, you would still end up with over nine hours. Movies can only most people's attention for about 2 and 1/2 hours max. OOTP was about that long. I thought they did well for the time they had. It wouldn't have worked to try to fit every scene into the movie because it would have been too long. I doubt they included the quidditch scenes because they aren't important to future movies. Is it important that Ron is on the team? Not in the scheme of things. With a book that long, you have to get down to the bare bones of the plot. That's what they did, and that's why it was the best movie. Look at COS. It included every detail, and I think it was one of the worst ones.
Kian Close - July 21, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
They could've still shown Harry was human, instead he's this great all humble magic man.
He's not even a remotely believeable character.
Hermione is a know it all.
Human.
Ron eats far too much, gets jealous, swears... Need I go on?
Human.
All of Harry's issues can be chalked up to Voldemort,
except
in the fifth book.
THAT is why it's so important that Harry be jealous of Ron.
Also, they didn't include things that were relevent,
especially as I find myself reading the 7th book.
