Title: Fanfiction

Does anyone here like to read fanfiction at all?

I hate it.
1) Its not imaginative - often they involve sex scenes because the authors are too idiotic to think up a decent plot. Also it plagurises JKRs characters and world.
2) Whats the point? All that effort for a disclaimer. Work can never be published.
3) Why cant authors just write original fiction?

I've never read any fnfiction before so I wouldn't know.

I think that fanfiction is cliche and silly. It always seems to be about American students moving to Hogwarts and having sex with Harry, or some retarded slash pairing. I think it's slightly ridiculous and it basically makes me want to kill myself. It's right up there with High School Musical.

In the student newspaper at my school (Which I'm writing for next semester) they have a funny fake news section... They were talking about how the 08 prom was going to be High School Musical themed...
Personally, I don't have a problem with Fan Fiction... In some writings, it talks about what happens between the last chapter of DH and the Epilogue...

I'm a big Fanfiction fan really. i love reading it, but there are some things that need to be done with it.
1. it's got to be original, i've read a few of those, but many are the same old things. but right now i happen to be reading a very original one which looks into the prophecy deeper, and changes it, or rather adds to it. it's quite good.
2. alternate universe. i love them. if you don't know what alternate universe is, then i shall enlighten. AU is where the book is changed at one key moment, and therefore it changes the whole outcome of the story. this can be done well, or really badly. sometimes, it adds nothing more than having a character do things differently, which is bad. i've read one which changes everything except the main plot, which i believe to be excellent.
and that's it to make me happy. here are some things that make me read it.
1. i can't get enough of Harry Potter.
2. reading original fiction means you have to get used to new characters. from a rubbish writer, this can be difficult. Fanfiction it is hard to get characters wrong, as they are already there.
3. its fun seeing the different things that people interpret the books. for example, there are numerous stories on what happens after Harry and Ginny kiss in book 6. i've not read them in particular, but it's an example. like Finn says, it provides information that you don't get from JKR, probably because it's too irrelevant to be published. however, it can still be fun.
4. we're not getting any more Harry Potter stories, and this is all we have.
5. i'm working on my own, so i have to like it.
some good fanfictions to read happen to be:
The Meaning Of One by Sorvet (found on siye.co.uk) - an excellent AU story which brings Ginny deep into the mix. unfortunately, unfinished and will not be finished for some years i believe, the author has begun with PS and is still only 7 chapters into COS.
Different Beginning/New Beginning- another AU fanfic which doesn't compare to MoO, but is nonetheless good. explores the idea of James and Lily surviving the attack when Harry was one year old. however, very long (Different Beginning is 86 chapters, New Beginning is 24 chapters so far), contains too much fluff and unnecessary info, and uses the line "he lost himself in her" all too often to skip sex scenes. MoO more recommended. (i am currently reading this one)
Soul Nexus - another AU fic taking it's ideas from The Meaning Of One. good read, but again is unfinished. may be confusing at times, but a good read.
perhaps some of those may change some views on fanfics, i happen to like them a lot, especially MoO, it's excellent.

I remember one fan fic that I used to love, and probably still would since it's completely ridiculous. It was AU, and basically, the Marauder's were all at James' house and they found the first Harry Potter book and started reading it. It was hilarious.

read it, but they were reading the third one if its the one i'm thinking of. which is better because all 4 marauder's feature in it. it was funny watching Sirius believe he was a murderer. lol
