Title: Bands You Must Hear Before You Die
Squall Leonheart - October 28, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
title says it all really, i've noticed a distinct lack of any musical knowledge on this site (perhaps my standards are just too high?), and i aim to solve it.
actually, no, i just want some ideas of bands you reckon you must hear before you die, with ideas of songs
Iron Maiden:
-RainMaker
-The Trooper
-Flight Of Icarus
Black Sabbath
-Paranoid
-Iron Man
-War Pigs
Metallica
-Master Of Puppets
-Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
-Jump In The Fire
Judas Priest
-Victim Of Changes
-The Ripper
-Dream Deceiver
Alice Cooper
-Poison
-Bed Of Nails
-Hell Is Living Without You
Nitro (could be hard to get hold of)
-Freight Train
-Cat Scratch Fever
-O.F.R (contains strong language)
Aerosmith
-Don't Wanna Miss A Thing
-Falling In Love Is Hard On The Knees
-Dream On
Linkin Park
-In The End
-Place For My Head
-Numb
Van Halen
-Dreams
-Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
-Unchained
Guns N Roses
-Sweet Child O' Mine
-November Rain
-Don't Cry
Ozzy Osbourne
-Crazy Train
-Mr. Crowley
-Bark At The Moon
i didn't originally intend to put that many in there, but still, lol.
what do you think?
Dorien Hurt - October 28, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
It's a pretty good list. What about The Beatles? and The grateful dead and the mammas and the pappas and simon and garfunkle and all the 60s bands that I listen to. hm?
Fawne Sugarmoon - October 28, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
The Beatles have to be on that list! Oh and perhaps some bands like Oasis and Blur? Although i don't listen to them; what about 'The Who'
Kennedy Jade - October 28, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
The only song I've heard on that list is Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, but I like that song. My list would include a lot of different people, but I still haven't heard these people so I'll take your word that they're good.
Dorien Hurt - October 28, 2007 11:06 PM (GMT)
If I made a list of bands they would be the beatles, simon and garfunkle, the who, the grateful dead, alice cooper, janis joplin, the doors, the byrds, Lynrd Sknrd, charlie daniels, the rolling stones (not because I like them, which I don't, but just because they're so popular), Pink Floyd (bnecause they're so well known), Queen, Jim Croce, The Band......
Those are mostly classic rock but they should all be listened to
Fawne Sugarmoon - October 28, 2007 11:15 PM (GMT)
I grew up listing to Queen well rather i grew up listing to my dad singing along to Queen; since Queens a bit before my time after all I'm only 17 lol. Though me and my friend do burst into chorus of Queen songs and other 'old' songs in the middle of the college common room.
Dorien Hurt - October 28, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
lol yeah, I'm only 15. A lot of adults are a little weirded out when I turn on janis jopin or the beatles and stuff. lol
Squall Leonheart - October 29, 2007 08:32 AM (GMT)
remember this is my own personal list, that's why the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who have not made it on, because i don't like them. although i have to admit, you need to have heard the Beatles at some point, as well as Oasis. don't know about the Rolling Stones, but i really do hate them (can't you hear me knockin' on Guitar Hero is a horrible song, and sympathy for the devil is better when covered by Guns N Roses). and The Who i only really know one song, i can't say their a band i know well. obviously, i know My Generation, which is a great song.
i personally don't think Lynyrd Skynyrd should be on there. other than Freebird, i only know Sweet Home Alabama, which is not the best song in the world. Freebird is amazing, and i'd recommend that, but not the band.
Pink Floyd don't deserve to be on in my opinion. i don't like them. they're a little too boring, not enough action in their songs, and some of the songs are very similar. i can't talk, i like Dragonforce, where almost every song is the same, lol, but if one of them is good, then they all are. i've yet to find a good Pink Floyd song.
Charlie Daniels Band... i didn't know they existed until recently, when i looked for Guitar Hero 3 and found the last song will be a heavy metal version of Devil Went Down To Georgia. this version of the song is amazing, i'm not so sure about the original, i've not heard it. Steve Ouimette did a great job though.
and please please please Kennedy, say you have heard Guns N Roses or i think i might cry. i'm thinking i can let you off some, because they don't have mainstream success, but Guns N Roses do, and you must have heard them. download Sweet Child O' Mine now. lol
Queen should be on there as well, i forgot Queen.
Queen
-We Are The Champions
-Bohemian Rhapsody
-Killer Queen
and i thought of one more
Meat Loaf
-Bat Out Of Hell
-Alive
-I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)
Fawne Sugarmoon - October 29, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
There is nothing wrong with bursting out in/listening too old songs! Its fun even if you do get a few weird looks lol... Except i did start humming 'Final Countdown' (which i like to sing on sing star 80's) in the middle of my science class this morning. Perhpas its ok as long as you don't get too carried away.
Kiley Stewert - October 29, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
damnit. now I have final countdown stuck in my head.
I don't like the stones, floyd, or much of the who. I love teenage wasteland and I like my generation. I like Tommy, but I prefer to listen to the broadway cast of it instead of them singing it.
Charlie Daniels is cool to watch in concert. He played the violin so fast that his arm was blurred. and then they had to bring him out a new bow because all the hair had snapped on the one he was using. It was really awesome.
And Paradise by the Dashboard Lights should be under meatloaf as well.
Kennedy Jade - October 29, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
I love the song Devil Went Down to Georgia, but I've never heard a song by Guns N Roses before. I'll go to yotube or myspace and listen to their songs too.
Fawne Sugarmoon - October 29, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
You'd love it in our common room! All we do is sit round and randomly sing song lyrics from decades past, sometimes for recent songs too. And yay go the final countdown tune!
I don't much like the stones, the song 'Paint it black' i really hate. I can't really think of any songs I've head by Floyd or the Who so i guess i don't like them either lol. And i have no idea who Charlie Daniels is but he sounds like one hell of a violinist.
Humm i wonder what every one's favorite band is? Anyone care to share?
Kennedy Jade - October 29, 2007 11:41 PM (GMT)
It's actually a fiddle, not a violin. lol Apparently there's a big difference because I almost got jumped for calling a fiddle a violin. I was passing these stalker-looking kids in the hall and I said something about some guy who had come to the school and played a fiddle, I called it a violin and they were like "Oh my gosh! It is a violin! How stupid can you get?!" And one of them just gave me this creepy death stare. lol I will never make that mistake again.
My favorite band would have to be...Nickelback! I used to hate them but now I'm pretty much obsessed with them. I don't like the Beatles amd I've never heard any pink floyd music.
Dorien Hurt - October 30, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I know it's technically a fiddle. whatever. lol
And I don't know how it's possible to not like the beatles. they molded the music industry into what it is today.
hmm....my favorite singer would be Rufus Wainwright or John Lennon. My favorite Band is either The Beatles or um....I dunno. I listen to a lot of bands but I have a million beatles CDs and records and cassettes and stuff. And my favorite musical's Hair.
Floyd...the only Floyd songs I like are Just Another Brick in the Wall and The Trial. The only stones songs I like is You Can't Always Get What You Want.
Squall Leonheart - October 30, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
It's quite easy to not like the Beatles Ki. the fact that i go on the music, not how many people they've influenced, and the Beatles are not my style.
and really, the music industry today is Rap and Urban stuff. it's not Beatles.
ARGH! HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW ANY SONGS BY GUNS N ROSES! THEY'RE LIKE, ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS THE PLANET HAS EVER SEEN!
Paradise By The Dashboard Light may be a good song Ki, but i can think of many many many better ones by him. anyway, i was only listing three of each band.
again, don't know Charlie Daniels, but if the solos in Devil Went Down To Georgia by Steve Ouimette are anything to go by, i can imagine he's a brilliant virtuoso. i just don't like fiddle, i like guitar.
Favourite Singer......... Probably Meat Loaf, because he has an awesome voice and all his songs are great. i think i've only heard a couple i don't like, Midnight At The Lost And Found being one of them.
Favourite Band......... got to be Linkin Park i think. i dunno, they just have everything. Chester is a good singer, Mike can Rap brilliantly. and despite it being Rap, the music is heavy and rock, which just makes them amazing. it's a mint blend of cultures, and i think only Linkin Park have pulled it off properly. and the new stuff is taking a turn to a new direction and still doesn't lose the LP charm.
but i also love NITRO! not as much as my mate, who actually has videos and recordings that the band doesn't even have. Batio is an amazing guitarist, Jim's singing is astounding, but you need to have an open mind for it. otherwise, you just think he's a bloke with something caught in his zip. they just rule.
i'll have to agree with Nickelback though. they are a good band. i prefer For All The Right Reasons album personally, i like the softer version of them. althoug Side Of A Bullet is an amazing song.
R.I.P Dimebag Darrell - did the solo in Side Of A Bullet and Nickelback dedicated For All The Right Reasons album to him.
Fawne Sugarmoon - October 30, 2007 10:59 PM (GMT)
I'll admit i couldn't choose a favorite band if i wanted too. I do like rather too many. I'm very partial to film sound tracks though so that doesn't help.
I rather like the beatles (ugh keep adding overused Fawne vocab into OOC talk lol.) Some songs are classics though i don't like them all, i don't think I've ever found any musical band/singer that i like all the songs from.
As for my CD collection its very small and consists of and Old MCR CD, Nickelback, All America Rejects, Oasis, Queen, a Narnia Soundtrack and some others that i cant see from my PC desk lol. I'm more of a download/Radio girl.
Kennedy Jade - October 30, 2007 11:36 PM (GMT)
My fav. song by Nickelback would have to be Animals. I used to think it was a terrible song, but it kinda grew on me. I like Far Away a lot too. I'm sick of Rock Star because it seems like it's on everytime I turn on the radio.
As for the Beatles...I just don't like them very much. Charlie Daniels is awesome! Fiddles are weird though. I normally can't stand the sound of them, but it's cool in Devil Went Down to Georgia.
Finnigan Tatupu - October 31, 2007 01:24 AM (GMT)
Ki, the Beatles were shaped by Earth, Wind and Fire, but I'm the only one to ever mention them... The Beatles revolutionized the music industry. They used nontraditional instruments, such as the sitar in a rock band.
It doesn't make us music illiterate because we don't like the bands you do. I have a lot more rounded taste for music, you seem to be firmly centered in rock/metal. If the only bands that make the lists of ones to hear before death are rock, so much music is missed. There would be no classical, no jazz, no fusion, no r&b, no rap, nothing... Without recognizing where the genre came from, you can't really understand it.

I hope that wasn't directed at me...
And if you listen to that music, then you would make a list of bands you must listen to before you die, and we'll comment on it.
And I thought the beatles were shaped by chuck berry. at least lennon was. early on when they were playing in liverpool and in germany they were rougher. It wasn't till they got Brian as a manager that they cleaned up and started the matching suits and haircut thing.
And I guess a better way to say what I did was that it's hard not to appriciate the beatles. or recognize them.
Squall Leonheart - October 31, 2007 07:37 AM (GMT)
Finn, i've already stated that this is my personal list and offered thing up so that other people can put up their own lists. the fact that nobody else is suggesting bands in the way that i did is no fault of my own, and i take offense to you saying i'm trying to offend everyone on this site. before you begin to have a go at me, suggest your own list, because i don't see you contributing.
Finnigan Tatupu - October 31, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)
Nope, wasn't directed at you Ki...
Beatles
EWF
Ray Charles
Bob Dylan
Eric Clapton/Cream
Miles Davis
Jimi Hendrix
Carole King
Bob Marley
Stevie Wonder
Billy Joel
AC/DC
Elton John
Frank Sinatra
All Classical symphony
Basically listen to as much different stuff as you can... That's what I do...
Dorien Hurt - October 31, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
I'm not crazy about dylan. Although I really wanna see that movie that's coming out about him.
Billy Joel's amazing. Although my best friend's dad used to own a hotel that he stayed and he said he was a jerk.
Frank Sinatra's amazing.
Finnigan Tatupu - October 31, 2007 09:21 PM (GMT)
I'm going to see Billy Joel next week... I really like him too.
Do you know Hurricane by Bob Dylan? I really like that song.
Squall Leonheart - November 3, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
I can't deny, Hendrix is an excellent guitar player, even if he is not on par with the newer talents. for his time, his stuff was legendary. but for some strange reason, i cannot get into him. Spanish Castle Magic is a well crafted piece of guitar skill, but that's all i can really say about him. this is strange, because i'm normally a fan of good guitarists (Batio, Malmsteen, Satriani)
Clapton again is someone who i could never get into, but probably should.
AC/DC i'm a little more iffy about. there are songs which are excellent. Highway To Hell and Let There Be Rock are great songs. Angus Young is not only a good guitarist, but an excellent showman and hilarious to watch too. except one problem i seem to think is that it's almost a mash of sounds. maybe this is because i've mainly only heard live songs, but i don't like the tone on the guitars at all.
the rest are basically either unknown or unliked to me.
to me, speed gets you a long way. i love fast guitarists. Dragonforce, Rising Force, Nitro, G3. great bands in my opinion, which is not shared by a lot of people because it is deemed to have no talent and not musical enough. i'd disagree with talent, of course. it takes a lot to be a fast guitarist, trust me, i know. playing 16 notes in one second is amazing (24 notes in one second for Batio is even more amazing). i can only manage 12 NPS, and i'm not a slow player when i'm improvising.
i don't know why i've just had that rant, but it fits in with the discussion.
