Title: Charming an Owl
Description: anybody!
Felicity Sanders - January 4, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
"Get down here, you little feathered monster!" Felicity hissed, as the school owl took one last look in her direction and flew out the window.
She stomped her foot in fury. She went through this every time she tried to send a letter. She didn't have an owl of her own, so she had to use the school owls. Unfortunately, Felicity's exuberant personality did not sit well with them. In her first year, she would be so happy to recieve letters that she was likely to pull a few of the owl's feather's out when she grabbed it. They had steered clear of her ever since. Her parents had promised to get her one, but finding one that Felicity got along with was another story indeed. After four hours of owl shopping, her parents had wearily suggested that they try another day.
Now, Felicity stood with her hands on her hips, surveying the room for a school owl that hadn't flown away at her appearance.
"You!" she exclaimed, pointing her finger at an old grey that was resting on a perch just out of her reach. It immediately looked alarmed and edged down the post. "If you don't get down here," she growled, "I swear I will serve you to students in a poultry soup!"

Guinn shivered slightly as she made her way up to the owlery. She needed to send an urgent letter home to her brothers and in the rush to get there she'd left her cloak in her dorm. She wrapped the edged of her scarf tightly around her arms before running the last few steps into the warmer owlery.
She paused as soon as she was through the door hazel eyes widening slightly as she noticed immediately just how many owls were out of their nests. Now what was she going to do?! She sighed and blew the fringe of her cropped blonde hair out of her eyes. Shortly before she nearly jumped out of her skin when a girl she hadn't noticed tat first threatened an owl.
"Bloody hell! You scared me never mind the owl." her voice was shocked but friendly, and it was clear by the way she spoke she was some what of a tomboy in nature.
"You know bribes work best." Guinn didn't even think to introduce herself, being the type of person who talks to everyone she tended to forget these things.

Felicity herself jumped when she heard another voice. She glanced over to see a girl she didn't think she had ever met before speaking to her. Felicity usually knew most people at least by sight, so she was always pleased to meet people she didn't know. At the moment, however, "pleased" was not an emotion she was feeling at all. For the moment, she didn't even register the fact that the girl hadn't introduced herself. Felicity wasn't the type for introductions, either.
She frowned and muttered, "Yeah, you'd think so, wouldn't you?" but just the same, she walked over to a bucket in the corner and lifted the lid to grab an owl treat out of it. Making her voice sugary sweet, she inched back toward the old grey, her hand outstretched with the offering. "Here, old guy, I've got a treat for you," she crooned, "Come on, you stupid feathered git, over here." The owl was now inching toward her suspiciously, but Felicity had never been one for patience.
"Oh, forget it," she said, dropping the owl treat and reaching into her pocket. "Accio owl." And the bird gave an alarmed hoot as it shot toward her, almost hitting her in the face. Smiling in satisfaction, Felicity settled it on a perch about shoulder height and proceeded to tie her letter to the offended animal's leg.
"Sorry," she apologized, "But you wouldn't come when I called, and that's rude, you know." The owl gave her a withering look and bit her finger hard before flying away. Felicity shrugged and turned to the other girl.
"They've never liked me very much," she explained, "I've bribed them too many times in my first year for it to really be effective anymore. But it was a good idea. I'm Felicity, by the way."

Guinn had watched the girl attempt to bait the owl before finally summoning it. She smiled I'm amusement at the way the owl was behaving; the old grey was obviously a bit of a stick in the mud.
Hazel eyes snapped back to attention when she realised Felicity had spoken to her, not the owl. She smiled brightly before extending her hand in greeting. For the other girl to shake.
"Guinn Kibben." she blanched when she realised she'd extended her hand holding the letter, out of impulse the hand she wrote with. She rolled her eyes at herself before withdrawing her hand.
"Just a sec." She brought her other hand to her mouth and made a loud wolf whistle noise. Upon stopping the noise a large brown school Tawny flew through the window and landed on one of the central perch's. She attached the letter to the owl before patting on the had and letting it fly off.
"Befriend 'Big Brown' back in first year. Go that's over 6 years i've know him now suppose that's why he'll talk all my letters now. Guess the bribe helps to of course; i have to give him something shiny when he gets back." She laughed and withdrew a shiny marble from her pocket showing it to Felicity before pushing it back into her pocket.

Felicity reached out her hand for a handshake and paused as the other girl extended a letter in her direction. For one confused moment she wondered if the other girl wanted her to summon another owl, but then she realized it had purely been a mistake. She was glad; she was quite sure any school owl within wand's reach had quite cleared out since her previous attempt.
She could not restrain herself from feeling pure jealousy as the other girl whistled for an owl and it came soaring in. She recognized it as a school owl - it was large and brown and healthy, which meant that it was probably one of the ones that had zoomed out the window first when she had entered. She decided that she was definitely going to convince her parents to buy her an owl...maybe one with some sort of charm so that it had to come when it's owner called.
She could not repress a slight giggle when the other girl informed her that she had done the opposite of what Felicity had done - befriended the owls from her first year.
"Well, you definitely had the right idea," she said amusedly, "I guess I've never had the charm to properly befriend them...hopefully when I get my own we can start out on the right foot...or wing, or whatever."
She made a mental note to bring a very shiny marble on her next trip to the Owlry.
"So, you sending a letter home?" she asked curiously, before biting her lip as she realized she was being nosy. "I mean, not that I'm trying to pry or anything," she added hastily, "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

OOC: sorry i totally forgot to post here...
Guinn smiled at Felicity when she spoke about starting out on the right foot. Owls could be tricky creatures, they were fond of the day and if they didn't take a liking to you they wouldn't take your letters. Luckily Guinn had found 'Big Brown' who although old, was a good fly-er; however he was also the only owl that would come near her. She supposed it was the lizard loving side of her personality that drove winged things away.
She placed one hand on her hip and left the other to dangle at her side; not in an annoyed pose but it seemed to be merely a talking pose she took. She was still smiling at Felicity and her eyes were trained on the girl rather than the many feathered distractions.
"Nah it's fine. Curiosity is fun." She laughed to show no malice before continuing. "Pops likes owl mail, novelty doesn't wear off for him. And my many brothers miss me, occasionally. I'm the only Witch in the Kibben line...What about you? The letter i mean, if you don't mind me asking."
Although the school was big on blood type Guinn really didn't get it, it seemed like people were treating as breeding machines for blood purity; like racing horses. She had no qualms about admitting her own blood status. Although even she herself was unsure of it completely. She told everyone she was a Muggle born but her mother might well have been a witch, since she did not share the mother of her muggle brothers.
