Title: History of Magic Lesson #1
Description: First Class
Aria Casanov - May 25, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
Aria Casanov walked into the empty History of Magic class, and looked around. This was her classroom now, she was the teacher and that felt good. She flicked her wand at the board and several lines of writing appeared:
Welcome to History of Magic
I am Professor Casanov, you may adress me as Professor Casanov or Ma'am.
Supplies: You will need for each class: A copy of A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, parchment, a quill, and ink. Consistently unprepared students will be punished.
She then inspected the class, making sure that all of the desk were in neat rows and that the class room was clean. Afterwards she straightened her emerald green robes and took a seat at her desk, waiting for the students to arrive.
Solana Lilly - May 25, 2008 05:05 PM (GMT)
Solana walked down the hallway to the History of Magic class, her leather bag slung over her shoulder. She reached the class room and tried the door. It was open. She entered and it was empty. Once again she was first to a class...she really had to do something about this being early thing...
She entered, throwing a quick glance at the teacher. She looked like the no-nonsence, strict type:great.
She sat in the third roll, towards the middle. There was writing on the board. She quickly read it: Call he Professor, be prepared blah, blah, blah she thought.
She took her copy of A History of Magic out and her quill and ink pot.
Then she leaned back in her chair and waited for the rest of the students to arrive.
Anabelle Anderson - May 25, 2008 09:03 PM (GMT)
Ana walked into class and saw another Hufflepuff student had already arrived. She found a desk somewhere in the middle of the room and read the board. She quickly grabbed our her supplies needed for the class and set them neatly on her desk, trying to be as symmetrical as possible.
The silence in the class bothered her slightly, as it was very awkward, so she decided to flip through the textbook.
April Teagan - May 26, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
April was excited. First day of History of Magic, and she wasn't late! That was a first. She strutted into the classroom with a smile plastered on her features. She wore simple black robes today, contacts, and green dragonskin boots.
She entered the room. There were only two other students present, and the teacher. She didn't recognize her Professor, but then again, she never did. She sat in the front of the room, placing her book and supplies on the table in front of her.
She loved History, any kind really. She read the writing on the board and continued to smile at the Professor. She was in a good mood today, and not grumpy, which was unusual. No headache today, she realzied.
April was prepared for a fabulous first lesson, and she hoped it was a successful one.
Rebecca Emery - May 26, 2008 09:08 PM (GMT)
Walking into History of Magic the first thing Rebecca's blue eyes set on were the students. Taking in the only three in which were in the room she noticed a fellow Hufflepuff, a Ravenclaw she had yet to meet, and April. Thinking about her choices on where to sit she finally moved and took the seat beside April. Sitting down she flashed the girl a friendly smile. Her smile though soon turned to frown when she read the board.
Rebecca had never particularly cared for the class and the words written on the board made her dislike turn for the worst. The teacher she could tell was one that wouldn't take any crap from any student. To her the attitude was very Slytherin like. Even so Rebecca knew she'd have to make the best of the class. After all she needed to pass it as it was a required class.
Thinking this thought Rebecca pulled out the materials needed for the class and set her hands on top of the book as she waited for the class to start.
Lisette Rasmuse - May 26, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
Lisette walked into the classroom. She looked around at the students and decided to sit by Rebecca and April. "Hey guys!" She said as she was getting her book and parchment out. She had read the board and didnt want to get in trouble, so she made sure she came prepared. She sat by the girls, awaiting class. "Hey guys, do you think this will be a fun class?" Lis asked.
Fawne Sugarmoon - May 26, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
Fawne managed to reach History of Magic on time for once this week. Lately she'd been in such a muddle with everything piling up, thankfully she'd manage to work it all out and she intended to start with a clean slate and be on time to all her classes. Starting with this one.
With this in mind she wandered with a more purposeful step than usual into the class, she looked around at the free desks unsure where to sit until she spotted April, the girl who taught her to dance. With a small smile she choose to sit in the free seat the other side of April. Without speaking much she sat down and placed the supplies on her desk, in a whimsical mess with no logic to their arrangement. Satisfied she was ready for the lesson she finally spoke her soft tones helping to turn it into a whisper.
"Hello, it is glorious to see you again."
April Teagan - May 26, 2008 09:36 PM (GMT)
April smiled as the seats beside her were taken. Fawne on her right, Rebecca on her left. She was almost afraid to speak, as though the Professor, who seemed strict, may attack. She turned to Rebecca first.
"You don't look too happy to be here," she commented lightly, smiling and nudging her side. She knew Rebecca disliked History, and she could tell by the expression on her face.
She turned to Fawne momentarily, who had spoken to her.
"Nice to see you too. Do you like History? Because Rebecca here isn't much of a fan."
Craven Blackwood - May 26, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
Craven too was on time for once, he even looked more well kept than usual. It seemed making up with his step sister had done both of them some good. There little grudges never did last for too long, especially with them being the only two of similar age in the family.
As he walked into the room he noticed how clean the place was and the writing on the board, aparrently this would be a strict class. With this in mind he choose to quickly drop into the seat in front of Rebbecca, the girl he remembered form his CoMC class. He nodded a greeting in her direction but it was questionable to whether she would notice it or not.
Without waiting for a response he quickly dumped his books onto the table and sat about waiting for the rest of the class to reply, he was apparently not attempting to keep the silence that seemed to be hovering over the room.
Guinevere Kibben - May 26, 2008 09:45 PM (GMT)
Guinn was a Ravenclaw at heart and was not one to be late. In fact as she walked into the room it was clear she was more than ready for this lesson, in her arms was the history book, a similar looking book with 'Notes' swirled across it and her favorite bright blue quill. The only noise she made when entering the room was her boots clodding on the floor; tom boy at heart and all that.
With the supplies in hand she quickly choose a desk in the middle of the room near another Ravenclaw girl and quietly placed the items on her desk, all piled in the corner. That was of course until she sorted out her ink and quill. Satisfied with the layout she opened up her notes book, which seemed to be filled with more page notes and doodles than actually written notes, and titled a new page before laying the quill back down on her desk.
With her lesson equipment laied out and the lesson looking not due to start for a little while Guinn choose to use her spare time to nosey at the class and who she'd spend her last year in history with. she couldn't believe she was already in her 7th year, what would she do after Hogwarts?!
Sean Avalon - May 26, 2008 09:46 PM (GMT)
OOC: oops wrong character posted!! Sorry!! =)
Aria Casanov - May 26, 2008 09:51 PM (GMT)
Aria stood up an eyed the class, then her watch. It was time for class to begin. She went and stood at the front of the room, eyeing the three talking girls.
"If you had read the rules," she said in a soft, dangerous voice, looking straight at them. "You would no that there is no talking in this class."
"Now, it is time for class to begin. For those of you who apparently didn't read the posted rules, I will reiterate them for you now.
There is no speaking in class, unless otherwise stated. You are to come prepared to class, and uniforms are a must. Any homework can be dropped off in my office, or handed in at the begining of class. Tardiness will not be accepted. If you have put your name on the roster list, you will be expected every lesson. If you do not have an truthful, believable excuse, you will recieve detention.
Is there any questions?" she asked, her eyes sweeping the room.
Rebecca Emery - May 26, 2008 10:15 PM (GMT)
Rebecca laughed at April's comment as she nudged the girl back. It was true she didn't look happy at all because she wasn't. She'd never cared or given much thought when it came to history. Plus now that the new Professor seemed to be very strict she knew the class was going to be even more harder for her to pass.
Letting out an audible sigh at her thoughts she greeted both Lissette and the Gryffindor girl beside April with a smile and nod of the head. Rebecca really didn't want to be caught speaking as she'd read the rules on the board. It was best that she didn't get on the Professors bad side.
Pushing her thoughts away to the back of her mind she watched a familiar face walked and sat down in front of her. Taking in his appearance she watched as Craven gave her a nod in greeting. About to nod back to him she was quickly interrupted by the professor which was now speaking. Listening to the woman's words Rebecca frowned. This was going to be a very interesting class.
Fawne Sugarmoon - May 26, 2008 10:27 PM (GMT)
Fawne had opened her mouth to reply when the teachers strict remarks had cut across the room. She had not expected the rules to apply before the whole class had even arrived, how odd. Most professors allowed chatter at the beginning. But then Fawne supposed if she, the most easily entertained girl in the world, found this topic repetitive than it was a degree of control was needed to teach history.
She looked apologetically at April as if sorry she couldn't reply, though her eyes held the promise of a repose later. This was before she turned her gaze to the teacher, a misty look on her eyes; not out of disrespect but out of nature her eyes always looked like that.
After the scolding for talking she decided to grab her pure white quill and scrawl her name on the top of the parchment; waiting instruction and further teaching.
April Teagan - May 26, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
April seemed taken aback. Fawne looked astonished that she couldn't respond, and looked at her apologetically. April half smiled and pulled her book, quill, and parchment towards her. She dipped her quill in the ink and wrote her name and the date on the parchment, ready for the lesson.
Craven Blackwood - May 26, 2008 10:34 PM (GMT)
Craven had shot the teacher a classic slytherin 'is this really necessary' look as she warned the three girls sat behind him. Despite sitting behind him he could hardly say there chattering was distracting. However being a slytherin he wouldn't speak up, that was in a Gryffindors nature.
Although he was paying attention to the teacher he noticed Rebecca's almost nod at of the corner of his eye and turned his head slightly to shoot her a smirk-smile which was cheeky but still slytherin enough not to break the trend.
Still keeping his head turned slightly he lazily prodded the items on his desk into a more appropriate locations before flicking back and forth through the pages of his history book...
Solana Lilly - May 26, 2008 10:38 PM (GMT)
Solana opened her mouth to ask a question, then closed it again. She didn't want to get a detention, it was obvious that this teacher was just itching to give them out.
This was going to be an interesting class.
Guinevere Kibben - May 26, 2008 10:38 PM (GMT)
Since Guinn had not been the one being scolded for chattering she had sort of switched off. Not purposefully ignoring the teacher as her gaze was located in that vauge direction, as long as that direction included the corner of her page which she was now doodling on.
She also knew the rules so she saw no need to listen to them, besides she found drawing a baby thestral to be rather entertaining. She was an animal enthusiast after all. And they hadn't been given the topic yet so it wasn't like she was missing work...
Aria Casanov - May 26, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
"Alright," Began Aria, noting the look the Slytherin student gave her and ignoring it, she had been a Slytherin herself afterall.
"Everything that is said in class should be written down in your notes. You will recieve a homework assignment later.
We will begin with Witch Burnings. Witch burnings were quite common in Medival Times. Can anyone tell me why?
Robyn Singe - May 26, 2008 11:11 PM (GMT)
Robyn slid into class, knowing she was late. She knew it was also a bad thing in this class to be late. This former Slytherin teacher probably knew her father, and probably would tell her father.
"Sorry I'm late! Would it help if I can answer the question? People burned the witches because they were afraid of what they didn't know and because of that they killed what the couldn't understand." Robyn gave a weak smile and slid into a chair closest to the door.
Lisette Rasmuse - May 26, 2008 11:51 PM (GMT)
Lisette was so angry at April, Rebecca, and Fawne. She had sat next to April and Rebecca and tried talking to them. They had paid no attention and Fawne sat down right in front of Lis and began talking to them. Lisette stood up, not caring about getting in trouble, and quietly moved all of her belongings to a seat next to Solana. She was sitting alone and she knew that Solana wouldnt ignore her. Lis sat down, not making a peep and smiled at Solana. Lis pulled her book out with a piece of parchment and a quill. She heard Robyns answer to th question and wrote it all down.
April Teagan - May 27, 2008 12:18 AM (GMT)
April was writing Robyn's answer down as quiockly as possible, though she wasn't sure she had got it all down correctly. She watched as Liz got up and sat elsewhere, thouhg she hadn't really noticed the girl until now. She really needed to speak up, although she realized that was impossible in that class.
She smiled an apology at Lis, hoping that was enough. She didn't want to upset the girl, after all, it wouldn't be pleasant in Potions later on. She looked back at her parchment, scribbling the final words down.
Aria Casanov - May 27, 2008 12:45 AM (GMT)
Aria noticed the girl switch seats, but decided not to comment. Perhaps this way she could keep her mouth shut.
Just then a student came in late, answered her question and promptly sat down.
"Miss. Singe, tell me, did you not read the rules posted in my office? Tardiness is not accepted in this class, you will report to my office after class for detention.
Your answer, however, is correct. I expect the rest of you to copy that down. Muggles in Medival times were afraid of anything magical, they believed in it back then, but they saw it in an evil light, that magical people would harm them, when in reality, most Witches and Wizards wanted to be left alone.
Today, hardly anyone believes in magic, if you were to go tell a muggle that you were a witch or wizard, they would laugh at you. There aren't any witch burnings nowadays.
Usually it was females that were accused of being witches. Can someone tell me what would happen if an actual witch was accused and to be burned?"
She looked around the class, waiting for someone to answer.
Rebecca Emery - May 27, 2008 01:00 AM (GMT)
Rebecca had noticed the look Craven gave her after she half nodded to him in greeting. She shook her head a small smile forming on her lips at his actions. Her attention though turned right back to the professor and her question. This was one she knew and was getting ready to raise her hand to answer when a Slytheirn girl burst through the door and answered instead. The answer only made to help save her from her tardiness.
Even so Rebecca dipped her quill in her ink and made sure to put down her name and date in the left hand corner of her parchment before writing down the answer to the question. When the professor went on to punish the Slytherin girl and ask her next question Rebecca looked around wondering who would answer. After all she knew she wouldn't because she had no clue. Looking down at her paper at that thought she hastily wrote down all things the professor had said before asking her second question.
Solana Lilly - May 27, 2008 01:06 AM (GMT)
Solana looked at Robyn, astounded that the girl would come late to this class, this had to be the strictest teacher she'd had so far...She smiled at her slightly as hello, she had never met the girl but had heard about her and she seemed like an interesting person.
She smiled at Lis when she sat next to her and in very small letters on the corner of her parchment wrote a single word : 'Hi'
Then she answered the Professor's question.
"If an actual witch or wizard was accused of beinga witch and was to be burned, said witch or wizard would cast a flame freezing charm and enjoy a tickling sensation."
Lisette Rasmuse - May 27, 2008 01:47 AM (GMT)
Lis looked at April and saw her give her an apologetic smile. She smiled back hoping that April would understand that is wasnt mad. She then saw that Solana wrote a tiny 'hi' on the corner of her notes. Lis smiled at her and wrote on her notes a small. 'hey.' She didnt want to get into too much trouble, it was already risky enough for her to get up and move to a new seat. Lis smiled at Solana and then raised her quill ready for more notes.
Robyn Singe - May 27, 2008 12:35 PM (GMT)
Robyn sighed, "I did indeed read the rules Professor Casanov, but I have been late to most of my classes for the mere fact that all my clocks are wrong. I'm going to get it fixed, no worries." Robyn smiled sweetly and wrote down her own answer.
Robyn despised history, she didn't even enjoy history on ANYTHING. Not even music.
Ravyn Singe - May 27, 2008 12:44 PM (GMT)
Ravyn came into the classroom and her eyes gave a sweep around the room.
"Professor Casanov please forgive me for being late, it seems I had to take a much longer way because of the silly stairs." Ravyn smiled sweetly and took a seat next to Robyn. She did this merely so she could bother her twin.
"Hello twinny." She muttered at she pulled out parchment and a quill.
Anabelle Anderson - May 27, 2008 02:48 PM (GMT)
Ana was slowly writing everything down. She felt amazingly bored. She twirled her quill around her fingers and zoned out a little.
She turned when she heard the interaction between the two twins. It made her happy she didn't have a sibling here at hogwarts with her.
She continued doodling on her parchment as she waited for the professor's next response.
Aria Casanov - May 27, 2008 09:02 PM (GMT)
"I'm afraid that the stairs are not my problem, Miss. Singe, what is my problem is the fact that you are late to my class. It seems that like your twin, you have a problem with arriving on time. Perhaps it runs in the family?" she said, giving her a cold smile.
"You will report to detention after class Miss. Singe."
"Now, Solana your answer was correct. A simple flame freezing charm would make the flames merely become a tickling sensation. However, sometimes said witch only got herself in more trouble by casting the charm, when they did not burn at the stake it only confirmed everyone's suspicion's.
And you must also remember that not everyone was able to cast the charm. some lost their wands when they were taken. Those people were usually rescued by the Ministry and the muggle's memories were modified. Sometimes, very rarely, a witch was actually burned to death.
However there was one very famous witch, caught multiple times, only because she enjoyed the tickling sensation that the flame freezing charm produced. Does anyone know who that was and how many times they were caught?"
She looked around the room and waited for someone to answer and watching as the students scrambled to copy down everything she had said.
Solana Lilly - May 27, 2008 10:05 PM (GMT)
Solana looked around the class. They looked as bored as she felt, although she was careful not to show it, she didn't want to do anything to set Professor Casanov off...
She heard the Professor's question..ah, she knew the answer to this one. However, she had already answered before, and she waited to see if anyone else would first...
Rebecca Emery - May 27, 2008 10:15 PM (GMT)
Rebecca who had been writing away, her hand writing getting sloppier with each minute as she hurried to write down what the teacher said, perked up at the question the professor asked. She actually knew this! Smiling to herself she raised her hand before going on to answer.
"The witch was named Wendelin the Weird and she happened to be burned at the stake forty seven times. To accomplish this she used various disguises." Nodding at her answer Rebecca smiled slightly and wrote down the answer. She’d remembered hearing about the witch when she was younger at a party her parents had hosted. And since she couldn't believe what the woman had done she'd remembered the fact her whole life.
The things we remember, she thought to herself with a shake of the head.
April Teagan - May 27, 2008 10:28 PM (GMT)
April frowned. Rebecca had beaten her to the answer. Too bad, she had known all about Wendelin the Weird. Sigh, oh well. She quickly wrote down all that the teacher was saying, and Rebecca's answer. She was usually very thorough with her notes, so she double checked to make sure she had gotten everything down.
She looked up, waiting for the class to continue proceeding. She liked today's topics; it was definately very interesting, although April already knew all about the witch burnings. It was a topic she had studied thoroughly with her father, who had been fascinated by them.
Aria Casanov - May 27, 2008 10:46 PM (GMT)
"That is correct Miss. Emery. "Wendlin the Weird enjoyed being burned so much, she made it a life's habit."
Aria flicked her wand at the board, she was done speaking for the day. On the board appeared a series of notes, dates and timeline of several different witch burnings, and similar things. The top read:
Please copy all of these notes in the following order
Then she flicked her wand at the second board and the homework appeared.
Lesson 1: Witch Burnings, Homework.
The homework is expected to be completed, neatly and correctly, by Thursday, May 29, before the next lesson. Everyone who is present today must turn in their homework or they will loose their house points. Please copy the following assignment:
Write a two foot essay (three to four paragraphs) about witch burnings, when they occured, witches that were prosecuted, and the reasons for the witch burnings. Some of your notes may come in handy, what you do not know, you reasearch.
Remember, the assignment is due on Thursday.
Then she turned back to the class. "After you finish copying down the notes and homework assignment you may leave. Those of you who were assigned detention, report after class to my office or house points will be lost."
Then she went and sat at her desk, busying herself with the next lesson plan.
Solana Lilly - May 28, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
Solana slowly copied down her notes, making sure everything stayed neat. Then she copied her homework assignment...She'd have to remember to finish it before Thursday...wow this teacher sure was strict...
After she was done she gathered her things, and put them in her bag. She whispered a good bye to Lis, and nodded at the teacher before sweeping from the room.
