Title: Lesson 3
Description: Wit Sharpening Potion
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 9, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
Gen walked into class. She was very diappointed with her students. Barely any of them did the homework. They will regret it when they see their grades... Gen thought to herself. She had told them since lesson 1 to do your homework or you wont pass! Gen was frustrated and went yo the board to write the assignment.
Write 3 paragraphs (5-8 sentences) about Aconite.
THIS WILL BE WORTH POINTS!
Gen sat back down and waited for the students.
Flame Harshing - June 9, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
Flame entered on time, the first student, swept through the classroom silently and sat down, taking up her parchment and quill. She read the board and started to write.
Aconite is also known as Wolfsbane, Auld Wife's Huid, Blue Rocket, Friar's Cap, Monk's Hood and Old Wife's Hood. Aconite is a hardy perennial, easily grown in northern climates, and will survive even the roughest winters. It grows to a height of three or more feet, has deep, shiny leaves and vivid bunches of (usually purple) flowers. It is extremely poisonous, and therefore difficult to acquire short of finding a wild plant & digging it up.
A muggle view on Aconite the idiots): Aconite is useful for treating sciatica (pains in the legs), especially when caused by rheumatism. It is also (in very small prepared doses) a nervine (like chamomile, fennel, & rosemary), calming to the nerves and soothing to the emotions. Ingesting Aconite will lower pulse strength & rate, and in cases of cardiac arrest stronger amounts have been known to bring back the pulse, however it is strongly advised to take this herb internally ONLY in extreme emergencies due to the uncertain levels of poison in the plants. When used in an ointment, it is effective in treating deep pains (like rheumatism).
By the wizarding world (who are much smarter and know what they are talking about), it is used in the wolfsbane potin (duh) which makes the werewolf transformation easier. There are also a lot of other uses, though this is the best known. She put down her quill five minutes later and her hand shot up.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 9, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
Gen put her paper down to see who had arrived first. To her surprise, it was Flame. She watched her come in and do the assignment quickly. She kenw she had talent and brains. This made Gen smile. She riffled her paper and hoped that she wouldnt put on a show like last time.
Rebecca Emery - June 9, 2008 10:09 PM (GMT)
Rebecca walked into potions and looked around noticing she was the second student there. Frowning slightly at this she knew she’d have to face the professor, or Gen as she otherwise knew her, pretty much alone for who knew how long. This was a problem because she had forgotten to do her homework about the Wit-sharpening potion. A problem she knew wouldn’t be accepted by the professor, any actually. Her thoughts were confirmed as she looked to the board as she made her way into the classroom. Wincing slightly Rebecca knew this was the work of an unhappy professor.
Sighing quietly at her thoughts she took a seat and didn’t bother to say hello to Gen or the other student, but went straight to work. Pulling her things out of the bag she had with her Rebecca sat her quill, ink and parchment on the table top in front of her. As she rearranged everything and dipped her quill in her dark blue ink she bit her lip wondering how to start. After a few moments of thinking Rebecca smiled a little to herself and began to write.
Aconite is a very powerful yet dangerous plant. The reason why it is so dangerous is because of it’s extreme poisonous properties. The plant because it is so poisonous got the name wolfsbane making it one out of the four names for the plant. The other names of course being aconite, aconitum and monkshood. The name monkshood comes into play because of the flowers shape which resembles or rather looks like a monk’s cowl. One other thing we know about aconite is that it’s folk name happens to be “Dumbledore’s Delight”. At least according to an Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs.
Aconite is a genus of a flowering plant that belongs to the buttercup family. It has over two hundred and fifty species some of them include the following: Aconitum anthora, Aconitum delphinifolium, Aconitum napellus, and Aconitum vulparia. There are many uses for aconite’s two hundred and fifty species, some well known while other aren’t. The most common use, at least for witches and wizards, is the wolfsbane potion which prevents extremely dangerous dementia that occurs when transforming into a werewolf. Other uses for aconite include: homoeopathy, ointments, and hypodermic injections. The value of aconite and what it can do has been fully realized more in modern times then in the past.
Now if one were to ever be infected by the poisonous aconite things can turn deadly. Medical assistance is highly, very highly, recommended. Symptoms of been poisoned by the deadly plant include: tingling and numbing of tongue and mouth and a sensation of ants crawling over the body, nausea and vomiting with upper mid-abdomen pain, labored breathing, and etc. Being that all aconite is extremely poisonous the plant shouldn’t be messed with or handled, but if one does they should handle it carefully being full aware of the consequences if poison is indigested. Nevertheless even though aconite is probably one of them most poisonous plants out there it’s used in everyday lives and has helped cure many problems people have in these modern times.
As Rebecca finished the last sentence and dotted the end with a period she read over her sentences only to smile at what she had written. She’d done her best for gathering information from memory. Knowing this she set her quill down and glanced to the door of the classroom waiting for the other students to arrive.
Nana Dirks'n - June 10, 2008 12:48 AM (GMT)
Nana walked cheerily into the classroom when she noticed the Professor Gen's mood. Her cheerfulness vanished as she read the assignment on the board. Three paragraphs before the bell, Nana didn't even know what aconite was. This was so unfair, it was like homework that you had to do in a few minutes. Nana dug in her bag for her quill. After moving swizzle sticks, lollipops, notes, and a book she discovered her quill, parchment , and her ink. Then Nana tried to think of what aconite was and how to write about it. She began to jot down.
Aconite is an extremely poisonous plant used in many potions. It is so poisonous it has also been called wolfsbane. It is also called aconitum and monkshood. Aconite has been called monkshood because when it flowers it looks like a monk's cowl. For some reason aconite is also called Dumbledore's Delight.....
OOC- she's not done yet- just thought I'd say that.
April Teagan - June 10, 2008 01:54 AM (GMT)
April strutted into the classroom for Potions, and sat down in the back today. It wasn't a good day, and she didn't feel like participating too much. She was shabbily dressed, but so be it. She glanced at the board and read the assignment, groaning. She hated writing. She took out quill and ink, along with parchment, and began.
Aconite is a plant which is known to be extremely dangerous, but powerful. It is often used as a pain reliever, or at least, was indeed used to be so in medievil time. Aconite is also commonly known as Monkshood and Wolfsbane. If injested, this plant will and can kill you immediately, at least for humans. Overall, Aconite is a deadly poison if not mixed with other ingrediants in potions, and should be handled carefully.
This particular plant is a taller flower, belonging in the Buttercup family. It has many diffrent colors for its flowers, such as blue, purple, yellow, pink or white flowers. It may look pretty, but in reality, is not so much. Do not be fooled; Aconite is very dangerous, and is not a common household flower.
In Muggle folklore, Aconite, or Monkshood, is said to turn anyone who injests it into a werewolf. We, as wizards, know this is not the case, as only a werewolf bite can do so. However, Muggles also believe that any werewolf who injests this plant will also be killed automatically, but only while it it's transformed state. These Muggle folktales, clearly, are based off the principle that Aconite is a poison.
April set her quill down and waited for class to begin, stretching out her sore hand.
Annabelle Fox - June 10, 2008 04:59 AM (GMT)
Annabelle walked into the classroom, a sweet smile on her face. She had discovered in her short time at Hogwarts that Potions was by far her favorite class, so it was always a joy to walk into the room and get to work on her newest concoction. She took her usual seat in the front of the class next to her pewter cauldron. And read the board.
Write 3 paragraphs (5-8 sentences) about Aconite.
THIS WILL BE WORTH POINTS!
Of course, having studied her entire potions book already, she figured that she could write a whole book on aconite. She quickly took out a scroll of parchment and her favorite quill from her bag and set to work.
Aconite, also known as Wolfsbane or Monkshood, is a highly poisonous plant that used to be used to be, and still is, used in many potions for pain relief. However, as I said earlier, it is highly poisonous and can actually instantly kill it's victim, wasting no time to spread through the blood stream.
Aconite is generally indigenous to Europe, and is sometimes found in Western England and Wales, but can't be considered truly domestic to the British Isles, mainly because it is only found on a few slopes, and had to be introduced to Great Britain. It is a tall plant, often considered beautiful, but it is truly harmful.
It was given the name "Monkshood" in medieval times, because it's flowers bud into what looks like the hoods that monks would wear. It is called Wolfsbane, because medieval people thought that they could use aconite as a way to kill and rid themselves of werewolves. They also believed however that aconite could turn any person who ingested it into a werewolf, which we definitely know cannot possibly happen. Aconite can be used in a wolfsbane potion, which helps to diminish the dementia like symptoms that come with lycanthropy, or being a werewolf. This is a very complicated potion and should not be made by a simple novice.
Annabelle read over her work. She wasn't very satisfied with it. Her articulation was poor and she really felt like she spent more time discussing where it could be found than discussing it's properties. She decided that she would wait and see what Professor Rasmuse thought before she reworked her draft.
OOC: I just signed up for this site yesterday and I didn't know whether you would want me to post in the first lesson or if I should just post in this one, since it's the newest. So, I took a guess, haha. If you want me to go back through each lesson, I will.
Valentina Greysoul - June 10, 2008 10:09 AM (GMT)
Valentina walked in nervously in class. She had been ill last time and she didn't get the chance to ask anyone about their homework.
She looked up at the blackboard. She could see that the handwriting wasn't has neat as it normally was.
She sat down at an empty desk and started writing. She knew quite a lot about Aconite.
Aconite is a poison that is normally used on people considered traitors.
It has symptoms which are very dangerous:
~numbness and mouth tingling that soon desolves to the whole body of the victim.
~ strangling sensation, and hard swallowing.
~sense of sinking and pain.
~nausea and salivation followed by violent vomiting.
The dark side of the Aconite (apart from the ones written above) is that it's very hard to cure, and it's remedy isn't well known.
Actually, she didn't even know the remedy, but she stopped writing anyway. And she didn't even know some backround information about it.
she started chewing her quill nervously, and looked over to the teacher's desk.
Nana Dirks'n - June 11, 2008 03:54 PM (GMT)
Nana added more to her essay:
Aconite is part of the buttercup family. It grows well in the north. Aconite has many uses and more have been discovered to date. One of Aconite's main uses is the wolfsbane potion to keep a werewolf from harming others when it transforms. It is also used for some hypodermic inections and ointments.
OOC- I'm sorry I have to get off
Flame Harshing - June 11, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
Flame grew bored quickly, but couldn't afford to act as she had in the last lesson. She spelled a piece of paper into the shaoe of a dementor, and cast another upon it so it would have similar effects but only in a much smaller area. She started making it hover around the classroom and it soon settled close to the professor.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 11, 2008 07:48 PM (GMT)
Gen had been reading the paper when she thought to herself, The students are taking forever to get to class today! Gen wanted terribly to start up but there were very few students, so she figured shed just wait. She thn saw something out of the corner of her eye, so she took another glance and jumped back a bit and yelped. She saw what it was a laughed out loud. She was kind of glad someone did this to her, it made the waiting seem less boring.
Gen put her paper down and looked around the class to see who did it. She already had a feeling she knew who it was and she was right She glanced at Flame who had a very suspcious look on her face. Gen didnt want to make a scene so she said in a low voice so only Flame could hear, "Good one Flame! Thanks for making my time up here less boring. What else can you make?"
Flame Harshing - June 11, 2008 07:51 PM (GMT)
Flame smirke, eyes bright, if this professor wanted a show she'd make one. She aimed her wand at the cieling, and silently conjured the dark mark, then looked back at the professor, a darkly significant look set upon her features.
Rebecca Emery - June 11, 2008 08:43 PM (GMT)
Rebecca had been doodling on her paper waiting for all the other students to arrive and the class to start when she saw something fly above her then move away. Glancing up her blue eyes widened slightly. A small dementor made out of paper was flying around the classroom. Raising an eyebrow she watched the thing fly and land by the professor who jumped when finally noticing it. The woman was speaking to a girl near the front, but Rebecca couldn't hear her so she simply watched and waited to see what would happen next.
When she suddenly saw the dark mark conjured up near the ceiling. Rebecca's blue eyes widened at this as she watched the Slytherin girl in front of her stare down the professor, though the expression on the girl's face she could not see. Even so she knew this was the same girl who had caused trouble in the last class. Knowing this Rebecca thought it best to keep her mouth shut and return to her doodling, which she did. Glancing up every few seconds to see what was happening.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 11, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Gen gave Flame a stern look. She walked up to her desk non chalantly and began speaking. "Now Flame I wanted to apologize for getting you in trouble the other day, I dont like to do that, but you cant be making the dark mark in here or do anything of the sort. Im ok with having fun, but please, dont push it." Gen said smiling. She felt like saying this was a bit too harsh, but she figured shed fet the message. After what Lycs had told her, she didnt want to get involved with all of it.
Flame Harshing - June 11, 2008 08:54 PM (GMT)
Flame flicked her wand and the mark disappeared, along with that bright spark in her eye. She looked up at the professor dull and bored again. "I'm just bored, professor. Plus, what harm is it doing? It's only a disused sign of dark magic- god!"
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 11, 2008 08:59 PM (GMT)
Gen was still standing next to Flame. "Thanks Flame. Now Im going to start up the lesson so you wont be bored!"
Gen walked to the front. "Ok everyone. Now the reason I made the class assignment so hard and worth points is because almost none of you did the homework assigned last week! Now Im being serious when I tell you that all of my assignments will be on the final and missing points will effect your grade! Hopefully this little exercise will help everyones score." Gen pulled out three vials and set them on her desk.
"Now you all know the drill! Come get your ingredients and I will write the instructions on the board. Dont forget you can work with a partner but I must have your own sample on my desk!" Gen walked to the board and wrote.
Wit-Sharpening Potion
ingredients: ground scarab beetle, cut up ginger root, armadillo bile
-boil water in cauldron
-crush beetle and mix with ginger root. should start to smoke and turn a dark gray color.
-then put beetle and ginger root mix into cauldron at the same time as the armadillo bile.
-They will mix instantly, stir a bit to make sure, and then the smoking will stop and the color will be a dark blue/black color.
Effect is presumably to make a person think more clearly.
Gen sat at her desk and said, "Please bring me a sample when youre finished! Have fun!"
Flame Harshing - June 11, 2008 09:09 PM (GMT)
Flame smiled innocently at the professor. "Thanks."
Of course, the professor had no way to judge how Flame was when it came to potions and keeping her occupied, she could have done with pointers from Scone.
Flame took the ingredients and made the potion and, like always, it was perfect. She took a sample and gave it to Gen, pleased that it had taken her very little time. But she was dreadfully aware of her low amounts of potion left, a potion the professor knew about.
She went upto her. "Can I have a word outside?"
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 11, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
Gen knew Flame would be done quickly. When she handed her her sample, Gen said, "Thanks." Then she heard her ask her to step outside. "Yeah Flame sure. Whats wrong?" Gen stood up and walked with Flame outside the classroom.
Flame Harshing - June 11, 2008 09:32 PM (GMT)
Flame walked outside with Gen.
"I was wandering if I could borrow some ingredients and your classroom tonight." she bit her lip, a little embarrased. "It's just I'm rediculously low on an important potion, I have no ingredients left, I don't have anywhere to make it and you saw how I get without it." She looked down, red now.
"I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important. I'd ask you to make it but... I've never wrote the recipe down, nor the method, and it's complicated."
April Teagan - June 11, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
April watched the confrontation between Gen and Flame, and thought that Gen did the appropriate thing. It was clear that since last class, Gen didn't want to make a scene. When the Professor assigned the work, April got right to work. It wasn't a difficult potion, and she had made it before at home.
She added the ingrediants carefully, stirring the right way and making sure sh was going it correctly. Eventually, the potion came out to a perfect dark blue color. She felt, at first, that it was too black, but then noticed that Gen had said that was approriate. Normally, at home, her potions wee dark blue... but maybe it was a different type or armadillo bile. Different maker, different color. She shrugged.
She was capping her flask and sample when she saw Flame and Gen head into the hallway. She walked by them, placing her sample on the desk. She sat back in the back of the room, and could hear the conversation outside the door quite easily. She smirked as Flame talked ,and listened closer.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 11, 2008 10:06 PM (GMT)
Gen felt bad for Flame. SHe gave her a soft smile and put her hand on her shoulder. "Of course you can. But I think it would be better if you used my office. Thats where I keep all of my ingredients and tools. Its pretty spacious in there so you should have plenty of room. Is that ok?" Gen said.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 12, 2008 11:52 PM (GMT)
Gen walked into the classroom and made an announcement that she almost forgot. "Just to tell you all, this will be the last lesson and there will be no homework! Enjoy!" Gen said walking back up to her desk.
Flame Harshing - June 13, 2008 08:15 AM (GMT)
Flame let a small smile pass for Gen, "Thankyou." she said, and followed her back into the classroom, taking her seat where she fiddled with a few pieces of patchment but did nothing to upset Gen, she couldn't afford that now.
Valentina Greysoul - June 13, 2008 10:15 AM (GMT)
Valentina had just finished her potion, adding ingredients here and there as carefully as she could, not wanting to screw anything up.
After a few minutes, her potion turned a lovely dark blue colour. She was happy that she was catching up and fast.
She went over to Gen, and held out the sample in a shy way, hoping to receive a compliment.
When she heard that they had no homework she almost jumped with delite. "thanks, Miss!" She said happily.
Genevieve Rasmuse - June 14, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
LESSON IS OVER! ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!
