The thing to remember about Ellen is that she has a very boy-ish appearance. Is it common for others to mistake her for a boy when they first see her. Speaking to her doesn't help much in figuring out her gender, for her voice is like that of a young male.

Ellen is extremely quiet and rarely speaks. But when she does talk, she does so with as little words as necessary and in a soft voice that others have to strain to hear. Before entering Hogwarts, Ellen was tortured mentally by the students in her Muggle elementary school to the point where she would not speak at all and secluded herself from those around her. Although she does not know it, deep down, Ellen really hopes that in Hogwarts, she will meet someone who will teach her to come out of her shell and help her to believe in herself.

History: Edith met Ellen on the Hogwarts express in her fourth year and Ellen's first. Ellen was lost and very shy, and Edith helped her find a compartment and some of her belongings, which she had managed to lose on the train. Since then, Edith has taken Ellen under her wing, and enjoys helping her with homework and other school-related issues. Ellen looks up to Edith as a helpful student, and despite not being very close, she often turns to her for friendship when she can find nobody else.
